BSC 2010-2011 Tryout and Team Selection FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
The following overview should provide an outline of BSC offerings and issues specifically related to the Tryout and Team Selection Process.
What is the Tryout schedule?
How do I determine the correct age group for my child?
· What is BSC’s policy on “playing up?”
BSC believes in developing players in the appropriate environment, based on ability. You MUST attend the first night of the tryouts for the correct age group before being considered for an older group. The Age Group Coordinators makes the final decision in regards to player placement.
Double-rostering is an alternative avenue we use to help players maximize their development especially in questions over age-group appropriateness.
How do I register for tryouts?
You can register for tryouts using our on-line registration process or by downloading the tryout form and mailing it in (PO Box 5029, Burlington, NC 27216) or at the fields 30 minutes prior to the tryout time. The registration fee for tryouts will be $10, which covers the cost of the tryout t-shirt (player gets to keep the shirt), and needs to be paid at the tryout registration area located at Joe Davidson Park. If mailing in a check or if selected to pay by credit card via the on-line registration process, the payment MUST be received prior to the 1st day of tryouts.
What if my child cannot attend the tryouts?
Send an email to David Myers or Taylor Saxe and explain your situation. We will advise you of your options on a case-by-case basis.
Can I help with the tryouts?
If you wish to get involved and help during BSC's tryouts, please email Mike White.
How do we advertise for the tryouts?
BSC tryout information will be posted on our club website. We will have signs posted around the area advertising the tryouts and will place info in local newspapers and will distribute information through the Alamance County School system and area Recreation Departments.
What should players wear/bring to the sessions?
Tryout t-shirts will be provided at the registration area. Players must also wear shin guards and bring plenty of water. BRING AN INFLATED SOCCER BALL.
Can the parents attend and watch tryouts?
Parents are welcome to observe from the spectator areas (outside the playing and evaluation zone).
How many nights should I attend?
Players are encouraged to attend all nights for their appropriate age group as there are benefits to being seen on more than one occasion. If you are unable to attend all the tryout nights, please inform David Myers or Taylor Saxe.
Can’t attend all nights?
If you know you cannot attend both nights, the player should inform the head evaluator on site at the first night, AND prior to the tryouts in an email to David Myers or Taylor Saxe.
What if my child is injured during the tryouts and can’t participate?
1. If the player is a returning member of BSC, a decision will be agreed upon amongst the evaluation staff based on most recent evaluations.
2. If the player is new to BSC we may hold a supplemental opportunity at a later date TBA.
How are players evaluated at the tryouts?
BSC evaluates players in four categories: Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological
Who picks the team?
The BSC coaching staff and Age Group Coordinators will pick teams. Decisions will be made based upon input from the previous year’s coach, tryout evaluators as well as staff devoted to next year’s team.
Are any players pre-selected prior to the tryouts?
No pre-selection for teams or player placement will take place before the official age-group tryout sessions. All decisions for team selection are made at the tryouts sessions and coaching staff meetings afterwards. For current BSC players this does not mean your performance at the BSC tryout is only taken into consideration. If we have worked with you over the last year then we know your abilities.
When will the players be notified and how?
BSC will post tryout results via the club website within 48-72 hours in most instances, but some results may take longer. We do not want to rush any decisions and will post results when all involved are in agreement.
When do the players need to respond to a team invitation?
Players must respond within 24 hours to the team invitation to the e-mail address associated with the specific team (e-mail found via the website).
When can we talk to the staff regarding player placement?
No discussions will take place before or during the evaluation week. No discussions will take place on the field during or immediately following tryout sessions. Contact Age Group Coordinators for any questions regarding player placement after the selection process has taken place.
Who will coach the team?
BSC Coaching Staff assignments (as of 5/4/2010) will be announced prior to tryouts. We have a strong staff in place and are very excited about the quality of coaching available to our players.
When and where will teams practice?
BSC utilizes Joe Davidson Park, Springwood Park and various elementary school fields. Training sessions are generally held twice a week in 90-minute blocks. Certain teams will have a third night of training at different times of the season.
At what level will the team play?
BSC currently fields teams in Classic (Premier, 1st and 2nd Divisions), Challenge and U10 Academy levels.
Can my child play another sport and soccer at the same time?
Yes – for balance, motor-skill development, cross-training and other reasons, participation in multiple sports can be good for young soccer players. However, families and coaches must evaluate the demands of specific teams/ playing seasons of each sport. The developmental curve of a soccer player will be affected by the commitment level.
Can my child play club AND school soccer?
Yes – BSC is proud of our many players who enjoy success on their respective school teams.
*Attention should be paid to the rest/recovery needs of young, growing athletes in determining when a break from training is in the best interest of the individual’s mental and physical health. For U14 and below, two soccer teams in the same season can be very taxing on a player and must be delicately balanced.
Are practices and games mandatory?
To the extent that players wish to develop, BSC training sessions, games, and all team events are designed to maximize individual and team growth, as well as safety from a fitness standpoint, and are therefore a mandatory commitment.
When does the season start and end?
General Calendar: Fall Season: August-November / Spring Season: January-April. Depending on level and age, calendars will vary to include tournaments, etc. The commitment is for both the fall and spring seasons.
General tournament expectations
U10: Festivals, Jamborees within 2 hrs of Burlington, (1-2 per season). No State, Regional or National Tournaments.
U11-U12: Travel limited to day-trips and 1-3 events per year. State-wide 8v8 events in festival format. No Regional or National tournaments.
U13 and Above: State, Regional and National events for highest-level teams
· See Player Commitment and Parent Commitment section for more detailed information
What is the BSC policy on multiple teams within one age group & how many teams will be created per age group?
Teams will be sorted by ability into teams:
· Classic: Cardinal and Black
· Challenge: White and Gold
Currently, we do not make decisions on the number of teams per-age group prior to evaluating the depth and talent-level of a particular tryout.
Who decides if a team will be Challenge or Classic?
The Age Group Coordinators, along with the coaching staff, will determine the level of play for each team. After an initial decision is based on Challege vs Classic, team performance will dictate the level of play from then on out. BSC will keep a team at the Challenge level (available beginning at U10 and may be offered through U18 year), or will move a team into Classic soccer (available at U11). We will not push a team into Classic if they are not ready.
Can I choose for my child to remain at Challenge instead of Classic?
No, players will be placed according to their ability. The professional coaching staff of BSC will decide what is the best level of play for the members of BSC.
Are you going to break up our team or combine it?
BSC will not break up a team haphazardly but will make roster changes if and when individual player needs dictate movement from one squad to the next. Decisions will be based upon finding the best environment for each individual accounting for the 4 categories of player evaluation (Technical, Tactical, Physical, Psychological).
What is the club’s policy on roster size?
BSC will strive to keep teams to a roster size which allows sufficient numbers for training and maximized playing time.
As a general rule we keep squads of 6v6 soccer to ten (10) players, 8v8 soccer to twelve (12) players, and 11v11 soccer to eighteen (18) players.
Individual teams will have different needs based on schedules, physical demands, and potential conflicts – all of which can influence the roster size. |
